Jacques-Émile Blanche, born in Paris, was brought up in a house once belonging to the Princesse de Lamballe, which retained its atmosphere of 18th century elegance & apparently formed his taste. Although he received some art instruction from Henri Gervex, he was largely a self-taught portraitist. He wrote a book, Portraits of a life-time: the late Victorian era: the Edwardian pageant: 1870-1914 (London: J.M. Dent, 1937).

German-born English Impressonist painter Walter Sickert said of him, "he is liable to twist things he hears." He seems to twist many of his sitters into similar predicaments.
