William McGregor Paxton, "The House Maid," 1910
The American Impressionist artist William McGregor Paxton is considered one of the "Boston School" painters of the early 20th century along with Frank Benson, Joseph DeCamp, Philip Leslie Hale, Edmund Tarbell.
Influenced by the artwork of the 17th-century Dutch master Johannes Vermeer and French Impressionism, Paxton's canvases with his favorite subject of beautiful women gained large public appreciation during his lifetime. The artist earned a reputation as one of the premier portrait painters of his day.
Paxton received his first medal in 1901, then there were the awards in 1920, 1922, 1928, 1930, 1931, 1935.
Paxton received a scholarship to the Cowles School of Art at the age of 18, in 1887. Two years later he left for Paris to study at the Ecole Des Beaux Arts.
The artist taught at the Museum School from 1906 to 1913.
Paxton painted the presidents Grover Cleveland and Calvin Coolidge.
